Summary of causes and solutions for water purifier not running but wastewater still flows

Cause of the problem Solution
Solenoid valve is broken Replace new solenoid valve
One way valve broken Replace new one-way valve
Air filter clogs mechanical valve Drain all air from the filter cup, clean or replace the mechanical valve.

1. The water purifier does not run but the wastewater still flows due to a broken solenoid valve.

The solenoid valve (also known as the magnetic valve) is designed to be located after the rough filter system and right before the booster pump of the filter. This part is electrically connected in parallel with the pump and performs the function of closing when the machine stops running and opening the air when the machine is running.

After a period of use, the solenoid valve may be stuck or damaged for some reason. If not checked and replaced promptly, it may cause water leakage through the valve even when the filter is turned off.

A faulty solenoid valve that cannot perform its normal on/off function when the filter is turned on/off can cause wastewater to flow continuously.

Reason

  • Impurities enter the solenoid valve through the water source and accumulate into deposits. Over time, this deposit thickens and can cause the valve to become stuck and unable to close tightly.
  • The valve is past its useful life and cannot perform its on/off function well according to the filter's operating cycle.

Solution

In case you are not a technical person, you can call a professional unit to handle the situation where the water purifier does not work or buy a new water purifier , hot and cold water purifier (the machine is too old, often has minor errors, does not meet other health safety standards,...).

However, to fix the problem of the water purifier not running but the wastewater still flows due to a broken solenoid valve, you should do the following:

Step 1: Check the machine's solenoid valve

  • Unplug the water purifier.
  • Open the filter housing and find the location of the solenoid valve, remove the elbow before the booster pump to see if water flows out there. If water flows, it means that the solenoid valve is the cause of the water purifier still flowing when the power is unplugged. If no water flows, the fault is not with the solenoid valve, then you need to check other parts of the filter.
  • Once the fault is determined to be due to the solenoid valve, the solenoid valve needs to be removed from the filter. Normally, there are 3 common situations: The valve is warped due to dirt accumulation, the spring is no longer elastic, and the valve is damaged, the copper coil is burned.

Step 2: Clean the solenoid valve

First, remove the valve from the machine, unscrew the valve base. There is a rubber plate on the valve base, remove it and use a towel or water hose to clean this part, then Dry and put the rubber sheet back in place.

After cleaning the rubber sheet, remove the center shaft of the valve body and clean the limescale on the body. Check the spring around the shaft to see if it is still elastic, if not, replace the spring.

You can clean the solenoid valve with a brush or soft cloth.

Step 3: Check the machine operation again

Reassemble the valve in the correct order and in the same position as before removing it. Check to see if there is any water leaking from this position. If not, the machine can run normally. If there is still water leaking, the valve may be damaged due to burnt copper wire. At this point, you need to buy a new solenoid valve to replace the old valve.

Step 4: Replace the new solenoid valve

To replace the valve, you need to buy a new valve with the same model. Then, turn off the power and water supply to the machine, disconnect the wire connected to the valve, remove the old valve. Next, place the new valve in the old valve's position, reconnect the wire.

After replacing, plug in and turn on the water for the filter to run normally.

When replacing a new solenoid valve, the valve must be installed in the correct direction for more stable valve operation.

2. The filter is turned off but the wastewater still flows due to a broken one-way valve.

The one-way valve (also known as the mechanical valve) is designed to be placed right before or after the RO membrane of the filter. This part does not need to be charged to run. The main function of the one-way valve is to only allow water to flow from the RO membrane into the pressure tank.

However, during the machine's operation, if the valve malfunctions, it may no longer be able to keep the filtered water from the RO membrane from flowing back. As a result, the water after being filtered at the RO membrane does not continue to flow into the pressure tank but seeps back and escapes through the drain even when the filter is turned off.

A broken mechanical valve or one-way valve can cause filtered water to seep back into the RO membrane and flow out through the wastewater line.

Reason

  • The one-way valve is covered with dirt, so it gets stuck, warped, and not tight. When the machine is turned off, the water in the pressure tank is not retained but leaks out. That causes the pressure to drop, causing the relay to continuously turn on and off, causing the water to seep back in. However, because the filter is turned off, the solenoid valve closes, preventing the water from flowing back and will drain out through the drain.
  • One-way valves used for too long and no longer able to perform their function can also cause similar phenomena.

Solution

When the water purifier does not run but the wastewater still flows due to a fault in the one-way valve, you should do the following:

Step 1: Check the one-way valve of the filter

First, disconnect the power from the filter and then check if the error is in the solenoid valve according to the instructions above. After determining that the solenoid valve is still working properly, proceed to check the one-way valve.

In this case, there are 2 common situations: the valve is clogged, the channel is dirty or the valve is damaged due to long-term use.

van-mot-chieu-rat-de-bi-kenh-tac-5

One-way valves are very susceptible to blockage during use.

Step 2: Clean the one-way valve

Remove the one-way valve from the filter. Then wash the valve to remove dirt and debris stuck in the valve under running water.

Step 3: Check the machine operation again

After cleaning, reinstall the valve in the same position as before removing it. Then observe if there is still water flowing out of the drain. If not, you can plug in the power and let the filter run normally. If there is, the one-way valve is probably broken and needs to be replaced.

Step 4: Replace the new valve

To replace the new valve, you need to turn off the power and water supply to the machine. Then remove the wire connected to the one-way valve and unscrew the valve from the machine in a counterclockwise direction. After removing the old valve, place the new valve in place and tighten it clockwise. Finally, reconnect the wire and turn the filter back on to run normally.

When cleaning the valve does not fix the problem, you need to replace it with a new one-way valve.

3. The filter is blocked by air, causing the wastewater to flow continuously.

Air trapped in the water purifier can be considered an indirect cause of the problem. The reason is that when the machine is trapped for a long time, it can clog the mechanical valve. And as mentioned above, if the mechanical valve is clogged or blocked, it can cause wastewater to flow continuously regardless of whether the machine is running or not.

may-loc-bi-e-khi-7

Air in the filter cup that is not completely discharged can cause the valve to become clogged, resulting in continuous wastewater flow even when the machine is turned off.

Reason

During the filter installation process, if you do not release all the air in the filter cup before running the machine, it will lead to air entrapment. If you do not handle it promptly and let the machine stay air entrapment for a long time, it will affect other parts, including the mechanical valve.

Solution

You can completely fix the problem by following the instructions below:.

Step 1: Release air from the filter cup

First, you must turn off the power and lock the water supply to the machine and lock the water filter tap and pressure tank valve. Then, find the filter core position, remove the valve of cores 1,2,3, then fill the filter cup with water and tighten it.

Step 2: Run the filter

Plug in the power, turn on the water source, the water filter tap and the pressure tank valve to run the machine again. Observe that there are no more air bubbles in the output water. Okay.
